Local Financial Literacy Coalition If you're involved with or concerned about students learning how to handle money/finances successfully - you've come to the right place. The Greater Washington Jump$tart Coalition is an inclusive, non-profit organization with over fifty individuals and organizations representing business, not-for-profit, government and education. They have joined forces to form a local coalition in an effort to coordinate and streamline the process of improving the personal financial literacy of schoolchildren and young adults in the Greater Washington, D.C. region. Greater Washington Jump$tart seeks to encourage public awareness, enhance professional development, facilitate partnerships (business, government, schools, non-profits), and promote the resources and activities of member organizations.
Goals Include - Continually assess the level of financial literacy in the Greater Washington area (District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland) using available surveys and testing of student performance.
- Develop and maintain a clearinghouse of personal financial resources, statewide bureau of contacts and speakers available for training and information on personal financial literacy.
- Serve as a resource for the state legislature to assess effectiveness of pertinent legislation.
- Build awareness of and promote support for the need for personal finance education.

The National Jump$tart Coalition, based in Washington, D.C., was first convened in 1995 and consists of over 200 organizations committed to improving the financial literacy of America's youth. RECENT EVENTS The ABA Education Foundation, along with Operation HOPE and more than a dozen D.C. banks and supporting organizations, kicked off Financial Literacy Month and the 2009 Teach Children to Save program with personal finance lessons to an estimated 1,100 students at Woodrow Wilson High School. Facilitators used Operation Hopes Banking on Our Future curriculum to cover banking basics, checking and savings accounts, credit and investments. This event demonstrated how the foundation, Operation HOPE and bankers across the country are working together to build a generation of educated consumers. Overview of the event!
